“You Are Not Alone” Campaign Raises Awareness about Gambling and Drug Addiction in Bulgaria
In a bid to educate students about the dangers of drug and gambling addiction, the “You Are Not Alone” campaign has been making waves in Bulgaria. Led by the National Revenue Agency (NRA) and the Customs Agency, this national-level awareness initiative has reached over 6,300 children and teenagers during the 2024/25 academic year.
Efforts to Combat Addiction
The campaign focuses on raising awareness about synthetic drugs, online gambling exposure, and the influences of social media. By conducting lectures in schools and educational institutions across the country, the initiative aims to equip young individuals with the knowledge they need to steer clear of addiction.
Building on the Anti-Drug Trafficking Department’s longstanding efforts to educate students about drug-related issues, “You Are Not Alone” has garnered support from well-known personalities in music, theater, and sports.
Recent Outreach Event in Svilengrad
On 19 June, a significant outreach event was held in Svilengrad, attracting more than 300 students. Key speakers, including Stefan Bakalov from the Customs Agency’s Anti-Drug Trafficking Department and Anna Mitova from the NRA, led discussions on the psychological and financial impacts of addiction. Bakalov’s presentation shed light on the harmful effects of various drugs.
As part of the session, officers from the Anti-Drug Trafficking Department conducted live demonstrations with trained customs dogs to search for narcotics, engaging students in the educational process.
Focus on Gambling Addiction
Highlighting the prevalence of gambling addiction among young individuals in Bulgaria, Anna Mitova emphasized the importance of addressing this issue during school visits. Despite being illegal for those under 18, many children have already been exposed to gambling activities, with a growing connection between drug and gambling addiction being recognized.
One contributing factor to the increase in gambling exposure could be sports, with a rise in gambling sponsorships in European soccer. Mitova also revealed that over 45,000 individuals are currently listed in the NRA’s register of gambling-vulnerable persons, with an increase in registrations following recent legislative changes.
Encouraging Prevention
To combat addiction and protect vulnerable individuals, the campaign encourages those struggling with addiction or at risk to register in the gambling-vulnerable persons list maintained by the NRA. By increasing awareness and providing support, initiatives like “You Are Not Alone” aim to create a safer environment for the youth of Bulgaria.
