WTA and ITF Call for Action Against Gambling-Driven Abuse in Tennis
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and International Tennis Federation (ITF) have recently released a joint report urging betting companies to take action against the increasing trend of gambling-driven abuse towards players. The report highlighted that during the 2024 season, tennis players faced such severe abuse that 15 cases had to be escalated to law enforcement agencies.
Out of these 15 cases, four occurred at Grand Slam events, one at the Olympics, and the remaining ten at various tour events. The severity of the situation even led to three cases being reported to the FBI, resulting in individuals facing venue bans and having their tickets rescinded.

The tennis chiefs are calling upon online casinos to take necessary steps to address this issue, which has prompted top players like British No. 2 Katie Boulter to speak out. According to a spokesperson for the WTA and ITF, there is a clear link between angry gamblers and the proliferation of online abuse and threats towards players.
A recent report revealed that over 8,000 abusive messages were sent to tennis players via social media in 2024, with 40% of these messages originating from enraged gamblers. This alarming trend has raised concerns within the tennis community, prompting calls for a collaborative effort to ensure a safer online environment for players.
Players Speak Out Against Abusive Behavior
Several players, including Jessica Pegula, Caroline Garcia, and Katie Boulter, have shared their experiences of facing abusive messages from gamblers. British player Katie Boulter received threatening messages after a match at the French Open, with some wishing cancer upon her and her family.
Following a loss at the same tournament, World No. 2 Jessica Pegula expressed her frustration at being targeted by abusive bettors on social media. Former World No. 4 Carolina Garcia also shed light on the detrimental impact of abusive behavior linked to unhealthy betting practices, emphasizing the emotional toll it takes on players.
Collaborative Efforts to Address the Issue
In response to the escalating concerns, the ITF, WTA, and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) have been sharing match data with providers associated with sports betting apps. Revenue generated from these agreements is then used to fund various tours and initiatives aimed at promoting a safer and more positive online space for players.
The tennis governing bodies are urging all stakeholders, including betting operators, social media platforms, players, and law enforcement agencies, to work together to combat abusive behavior driven by gambling. By fostering a constructive dialogue and taking proactive measures, the industry aims to create a more supportive environment for players and fans alike.
