Bally’s Corporation Saves Preston High School from Closure with $8.5M Purchase
Bally’s Corporation, a prominent American casino operator, has made a generous move to acquire Preston High School, a Catholic all-girls high school in the Bronx, preventing its imminent closure. This philanthropic act has come at a crucial time as Bally’s continues its pursuit of one of the three downstate New York casino licenses.
Bally’s Foundation Steps In
On April 22, Bally’s Foundation, the charitable arm of the company, finalized a deal to buy Preston High School in Throggs Neck. The school was on the brink of shutting down, but thanks to this acquisition, it will now be able to continue its operations.
The Sisters of the Divine Compassion, who are the owners of the school, had initially turned down Bally’s offer, believing that external assistance would not be enough to sustain the institution. However, with the collective efforts of students, parents, teachers, and officials, the Sisters eventually agreed to the deal. Bally’s Foundation purchased the property for $8.5 million and will lease it back to the school for a nominal fee of one dollar per year for 25 years, with options for renewals every five years. Additionally, Bally’s will cover up to $1.6 million for repairs and other expenses.
Relief and Gratitude from Officials and Alumni
Local officials and alumni expressed relief and gratitude towards Bally’s for stepping in to save the historic school. Assembly member Michael Benedetto hailed the agreement as a “tremendous victory for the students” and the Throggs Neck community. Borough president Vanessa Gibson praised the deal as a testament to the community’s collective strength.
Attorney General Letitia James commended Preston High School for its longstanding service to the community and thanked all those who advocated for its preservation.
Continuing Support and Community Engagement
Bally’s chairman, Soo Kim, emphasized the company’s commitment to being a trusted, long-term partner to the communities it serves. Kim reiterated that supporting institutions like Preston High School aligns with Bally’s core values.
Despite the support from Bally’s, the Sisters cautioned that the financial aid would not address the school’s enrollment and budget challenges.
Pursuit of Downstate Casino Licenses
Meanwhile, Bally’s is actively vying for one of the three downstate New York casino licenses. The company aims to secure a license to develop a casino hotel in the Bronx. Bally’s has pledged to contribute $625 million to the local community and support various projects as part of its casino hotel proposal.
Bally’s argues that the casino hotel would generate employment opportunities and stimulate the local economy in the Bronx. While many locals support the initiative, concerns have been raised about potential issues such as increased traffic, crime, and gambling addiction.
In a related development, Soo Kim, Bally’s chairman, also weighed in on the company’s recent acquisition of Australia’s Star Entertainment Group.
